Students at the Lander-Grinspoon Academy are learning robotics as part of the David Lear Sulman Computing, Science, and Engineering Initiative. Teachers launched the program with new Lego WeDo robotics kits, “There are so many projects you can do with these kits,” said Lauren Yamilkoski, Lander-Grinspoon’s second grade teacher. “You can connect this to the whole curriculum — science, language arts, and history.” The LEGO robotics kits are just one facet of the launch and implementation of a multi-year initiative aimed at expanding and supporting 21st century education at the Jewish Day School. The initiative will focus on the development of new mindsets and skillsets in the areas of computing, physical science and engineering. The initiative will also develop and support teacher capacity to deliver new CSE related subjects and activities such as computer coding, engineering design and more.

Lander-Grinspoon Principal Deborah Bromberg Seltzer considers computation and engineering to be critical skills for today’s students. “Through this initiative we hope to better prepare our students to meet the challenges and opportunities of the future so that they too can become contributing members of our 21st century technological society,” Seltzer said.
